Looking for a PHD researcher in recommender systems

We are looking for a PhD student who will design algorithms for recommender systems to tackle challenges in news recommendation.

Current personalized news applications are either machine- or human driven. A machine-driven approach is effortless for the user, but also means that neither the user nor the journalist have any control over the selection of articles and recommendations. In this project, the candidate will combine machine intelligence with human intelligence, with a view to a) serving every reader a personal, user-controlled news experience completely tailored to personal interests, and b) assisting the reader intelligently in exploring new subjects. The candidate will design algorithms that provide intelligent and surprising recommendations, taking into account characteristics of both the readers and the articles they read. The candidate will work with real data from a Flemish publisher.
