Infrastructure

Educational technology offering at itec.

Edulab is a fully-connected laboratory for conducting in vivo experiments on the campus Kulak in Kortrijk, equipped with state-of-the-art educational technology. Edulab comprises 4 different learning spaces in which researchers can investigate the efficacy of and experiment with innovative educational technology.

First of all we have our collaborative learning space, in which students work together on tasks under supervision. The infrastructure allows them to work in a shared virtual space that is also projected in the physical space for better collaboration. The teacher can moderate the content that is displayed on the group screens.

Edulab also comprises the necessary equipment for Augmented and Virtual Reality. Augmented reality  allows us to display personalized feedback for e.g. operator instructions. With our virtual reality laboratory, we can simulate different learning environments so people can learn in a controlled and harmless way (e.g. learning children to drive safely in traffic).

The hybrid virtual classroom is one of our variations on synchronous hybrid learning in our Edulab. Within this learning setting both on-site and remote students are simultaneously included in a course.

In the Hybrid Virtual Classroom one group follows the course on campus and simultaneously individuals follow the course remotely from the location of their choice. The individual remote participants are displayed lifelike sized on screens, so the teacher and fellow on-site students can easily interact with the remote students. Contrary to traditional streaming solutions, this classroom is equipped with a comprehensive learning platform, which enables students to actively participate to the course (i.e. in writing as well as orally), as if they would all be in the same physical space.

The remote classroom is another variation on synchronous hybrid learning in our Edulab. Within this learning setting both on-site and remote students are simultaneously included in a course.

Here, one group participates in the course on campus and another group participates in the course synchronously from another campus. The remote group is displayed on screen for the teacher and students. Contrary to traditional streaming solutions, this classroom is equipped with a comprehensive learning platform, which enables students to actively participate to the course (i.e. in writing as well as orally), as if they would all be in the same physical space.

The difference within this setting is that the students  still depend on a location, this in contrast with the hybrid virtual classroom.
