Increased reliance on multilingual corpora has led to the emergence of a new strand in translation research and pedagogy called “corpus-based translation studies”. The objective of this seminar is to introduce the field and point to some fruitful synergies with corpus-based contrastive linguistics and learner corpus research. I will describe the different types of multilingual corpus resources, highlighting both their strengths and their limitations and the types of analysis to which they can be submitted. Special emphasis will be placed on the role comparable and translation corpora can play in improving bilingual dictionaries, particularly their phraseological coverage, an area in which there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Sylviane Granger is een autoriteit op het vlak van de toegepaste taalkunde. Als directeur van het Center for English Corpus Linguistics wist ze een bijzonder sterk team uit te bouwen met een indrukwekkende output. Haar onderzoek vertrekt systematisch van de krachtige empirische basis die corpora aanreiken om theoretische problemen aan te pakken uit vrijwel alle domeinen van de toegepaste taalkunde, gaande van taalverwerving en taaldidactiek, over NLP en contrastieve taalkunde tot translation studies.
